Diversity On Demand Celebrates Black History Month #GIVEAWAY

February is Black History Month. As a mother of a biracial child, I definitely want my son to have full exposure to his ethnicity either through books or television. So I was thrilled to find out that digital cable customers will have an opportunity to watch a variety of films on Black History through  Diversity on Demand programming. Customers can choose from comedies, musicals, historical events and dramas by some amazing African Americans.

Check out what On Demand has to offer this month:
  • Milestones In Black History - There are several offerings that examine the history of the struggles and strife, the tragedies and the triumphs of African Americans in the U.S., from the time of Lincoln to the Civil Rights era, including “Lincoln: American Mastermind.” For children and adults alike, there’s “The Tuskegee Airmen,” recounts the true story of how a group of African- American WWII pilots overcame racist opposition to become one of the finest U.S. fighter groups in history, and “First to Fight: The Black Tankers of WWII
  • Profiles In Courage - The biographies of influential African Americans come to life in dramatic profiles and stories of individuals who may be less known but perhaps should be more so, such as legendary baseball great Curt Flood in the documentary “The Curious Case of Curt Flood” and the five wrongly imprisoned teens in “The Central Park Five.” Drama movies like “Flight” starring Denzel Washington and “The Help” starring Viola Davis, and TV programs such as “House of Lies” starring Don Cheadle, showcase award-worthy performances from notable African-American A-list actors. Viewers can also get a close look at what it’s like living in the crossfire of America’s drug war in the Emmy Award-winning miniseries “The Corner.”
  • Pride, Passion and Pain - For sports buffs, there are important shows that exemplify the contributions and struggles of athletes, such as “Joe Louis: America’s Hero...Betrayed,” and “Breaking the Huddle: The Integration of College Football.”
  • That’s Entertainment - Music aficionados can celebrate the true artistry of entertainer and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte in “Sing Your Song,” then laugh along with “Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy.”

Bello Returns to New York in Bello Mania

CIRCUS SUPERSTAR BELLO NOCK PREMIERES HIS FIRST INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION
BELLO MANIA
AT THE NEW VICTORY THEATER FROM MARCH 15 - 31

Bello Nock, the circus superstar Time Magazine calls “America’s Best Clown,” will amuse and amaze children of all ages as he

performs his unique blend of comic daredevilry in a theatrical setting for his brand new show, Bello Mania. Adding a unique andpersonal touch to the big thrills and laughter audiences have come to expect from their favorite entertainer, Bello will be joined on stage by his daughter Annaleise and supported back stage by his wife, Jennifer, and daughter Amariah. The U.S. premiere of Bello Mania is a true family affair that will perform at The New Victory Theater, 209 West 42nd Street, from March 15-31, 2013.

"I'm really excited about Bello Mania, because I have always wanted to create a show of my own that gives the audience a sneak peek into my world,” said Bello, who will wow audiences with stunts on a sway pole, balance a chair on a high wire and perform tricky trampoline mayhem as only he can do. “Every life has a story and I want to share a little of mine, while doing what I love. Bello Mania is as much about honoring my unique family heritage as it is about bringing thrills and everlasting memories to kids of all ages,” he concluded.

His wife, Jennifer, writes and directs, while daughter Amariah keeps things in line backstage as the production stage manager. Though she won’t be wearing Bello’s signature gravity-defying hairdo, 16 year-old Annaliese follows her father’s footsteps to become an eighth generation performer born to a family of daredevils, ballerinas, equestrians and opera singers.
Born Demetrius Alexandro Claudio Amadeus Bello Nock in Sarasota, Florida, Bello is the most honored modern day circus celebrity.  He is featured in the 2013 edition of the Guinness World Book of Records for the first ever high wire walk over a cruise ship at sea; in 2011, he received the circus world’s highest honor, the Gold Clown (presented by Princess Stephanie of Monaco), at the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival. Bello was the Ringling Museum’s 2012 “Circus Celebrity of the Year,” and in 2009 was the youngest person ever inducted into the Circus Ring of Fame. He’s won the Silver Clown in Monte Carlo, the Gold Lion in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Prix Special in Grenoble, France, and again at the Daidogei World Cup Festival in Japan. Bello has also won the Walt Disney Award for Creative Entertainment.

He spent several years with Mexico’s Circo Atayde before joining the prestigious Big Apple Circus in 2000. He stayed with the company for three seasons, leaving after his final tour, Bello and Friends. Beginning in 2004, he wooed millions as a star of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Circus, becoming the only person in the company’s history to have a production named after him. The show was called Bellobration, and toured the U.S. from 2007-2008.

Bello also designs and builds all of his own stunts and riggings, including the Double Wheel of Steel and the Aqua Trap.  As a self-proclaimed “comic daredevil,” he has hung by his toes under a helicopter flying over the Statue of Liberty, walked a high wire from the NYC Ballet to Avery Fisher Hall, repelled off of Madison Square Garden and ridden an elephant through the Mid-Town Tunnel.

Bello Mania is his first independent production. Performing alongside him is Dave Cox, Zebulon Fricke and Annaliese Nock. The cast is accompanied by a creative team of Jennifer Nock for Direction, David Miller for Set Design, Guido Naus for Musical Direction, Eric Winterling and Kay Torralva for Costume Design and Steve Curtis for Safety and Technical Direction.

Bello Mania is recommended for everyone 4 and over.

Toy Fair 2013 #TF13 #TFNY

This past weekend Toy Fair hit New York City's Jacob Javits Center. Since I started blogging almost 2 years ago, I have heard so much about it. This year I was excited to be attending for my first time.
Me & Talking Tom Cat

It was very overwhelming being at the event. It is the largest conference in the Toy Industry. There was so much to see. I was not able to spend all 3 days there which sucked because I had to work, so I was only able to attend on Sunday. The few hours I was there was exhausting. I did get to see some great new toys coming out this year. I'm pretty excited about it.

Here are some of my favorites:

Adventure Time - Finally some Finn & Jake toys coming! Andre loves this show, which honestly  I don't quite get. He tried to teach me about Fiona & Cake but I was totally confused. They have an awesome 3D puzzle with glasses, board games, whoopee cushions and action figures that will be launching. The brand has realized what a tremendous hit this show has become & is ready to meet the demands of all fans.

Madame Alexander Doll Academy - Can you believe that Madame Alexander is celebrating its 90th anniversary? I have been a fan since a little girl. My mom gave me a Snow White doll when I was about 7 years old. I still have it untouched in its original packaging. Since my world is dominated by trucks & Ben 10, I was happy to stop by their booth to see their newest and current collections.

These are a few of their dolls that are collectibles, perfectly crafted with unique detail to attention.
Disney's Oz the Great and Powerful.
Disne Princesses

Candy Princess holding a Dylan's Candy Bar Lollipop

Madame Alexander has these dolls that can be played with.
Fancy Nancy

Pinkalicious
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - I was excited to enter Playmates Toys booth to see the launch of Nickelodeon's television hit Ninja Turtle toys. Ever since their relaunch last year, TMNT has become so popular again. My son was all about TMNT this holiday season so I couldn't wait to share with him the newest figures coming soon.

Skylanders Swap Force - On the heels of the huge success of Skylanders Spyro Adventures and Skylanders Giants, this fall we will be bombarded yet again with another franchise. This time 16 new figures will be introduced that can be swapped into over 200 new characters in Skylanders Swap Force. I think I most excited about this launch because even though you will need a new portal, you will be able to use your figures from the other 2 games. The graphics are brighter & better. The characters will be able to jump which they aren't able to do in the other games. Expect the release sometime this fall and be prepared to be mesmerized!

These were such a few of the thousands of toys exhibited last week. Definitely be prepared to see some great new toys for both girls & boys. There's something for everyone and every age.

Celebrating Chinese New Year with Build A Bear

Chinese New Year celebrations are coming to a close this weekend. They started last weekend on the 10th. I have to admit its been a quiet one in our household. With everyone's conflicting schedules it was hard to get together to truly celebrate the Year of the Snake. It was quite disappointing but I tried my best to continue traditions with my son.
I gave him the traditional red envelope with a crisp bill signifying fortune and luck. We couldn't cook an authentic meal, so we opted to order in from one of our favorite Chinese restaurants for dinner.
When my blogger buddy Onica from The Mommy Factor offered me an opportunity to work with her on an Asian Black program with Build A Bear I jumped at it. Build A Bear created a limited edition plush snake in honor of the Lunar holiday.

Andre was excited to get this. I was talking to him about Chinese New Year a few days before. For him to have something tangible about his culture, made him realize that yes this is a big thing in society. The snake has a friendly face and soft body. You don't find many toys for boys that feature the Asian culture. I loved the calendar around the snake that shows you by the year you are born what animal you fall under the lunar calendar. Andre had fun figuring out which animal everyone was at home. We figured out that this is my mothers' year! She had no idea.

I really appreciate what Build A Bear did and I am ecstatic that this will be a yearly thing. The Asian culture is such a large part of the New York City community. Being half Chinese and not having any surviving Asian relatives, it makes it difficult to raise a biracial child. I was fortunate to have my grandparents to instill their culture in me. Since he doesn't look Asian, he constantly gets mistaken for being Latino. I want to make sure he knows who & where his family originated from. I want him to be just as proud of each. I don't ever want my son to not feel "represented" in society. I hope many other companies will follow suit with Build A Bear & realize that this world is changing its colors. We all need representation. Gong Hay Fat Choy!

Disclosure: I received the "Year of the Snake" as part of a cultural promotional program with Asian Black Community, Build-a-Bear Workshop and The Mommy Factor  Since this item is only available for a limited time, it might be sold out in Build-a-BearWorkshop stores and online website. No other compensation was received. Views expressed are always 100% my own.

Harlem Sports Programs

Growing up I wasn't active in sports. I don't know if it was because I'm a girl or there weren't many programs around in my neighborhood. I was never pushed to be athletic. I definitely think that hindered me because I hate physical activity now as an adult. My husband is the total opposite. He was always involved in some sort of sport. Even now he's part of a basketball league. We have decided that we want our son to be just as athletic. It's not only so he can learn about the game but there are so many factors that are involved in our decision making.
For one, being active keeps you just that, ACTIVE. I believe that once you are accustomed to always playing and moving around you will bring that into your adult life. You don't have to call it exercise because that word is a turn off for many, especially me. But maintaining an active lifestyle will lead to a healthier life.
Secondly, being a member on a team fosters sportsmanship and discipline. Having the responsibility of others while you play gives you the mind set that you have to be responsible for your actions. There's no fooling around unless you want to deal with the consequences.
Thirdly, it keeps the kids off the streets. Growing up in Spanish Harlem my friends & I were able to hang out and just be kids. We didn't have to worry about getting into a fight & wondering if you will get shot/stabbed. The children today have A LOT more to fear. Keeping them busy will help keep them off the streets or hanging out with the wrong people.

I've been asked about the sports programs that Andre is involved in by many parents. I wanted to share this information with everyone. These are successfully run programs in East/West Harlem neighborhoods. They are low cost if any. Andre has been involved with most for about 2 or more years. We highly appreciate what they have given Andre thus far. Not only skills in the games, but friendships and the respect for his teammates and the game.

FC Harlem Lions - Soccer
This soccer program has a springs skills program that is currently open for registration. You can register online & mail in payment. They play in Riverbank State park in the spring. For the fall program they use the field on 138th & Amsterdam, across City College. Cost is about $50-$80

NYC Bombsquad - Basketball
Andre is currently in their winter skills program which ends today. He's enhanced his knowledge and skills during these past 10 weeks. Their program generally runs in the summer for 15 weeks. They use the outdoor basketball courts on 99th Street & 3rd Avenue. Each child receives a trophy about 3 ft tall. Besides learning skills, they play scrimmages and have a competition on the last day. Andre won 2nd place for Speed Dribbling last summer (see pic above) Cost is about $100.

Harlem RBI - Baseball
This is a FREE Saturday summer program that just opened registration yesterday. Go with a copy of your child's birth certificate and fill out the short application there to guarantee a spot. They fill very quickly since they are free and well known in the neighborhood. The office location is on 102nd & 1st Ave by the Metro North buildings. They have their own field on 102nd & 1st Avenue or they use the one on 96th Street. Kids get a free uniform as well as a trophy on the last day with a huge family BBQ.

I hope you will look into these programs. If you have any others that you would like me to share please let me know. I am always looking! I hope to see you on one or all of these fields this summer!

The MOMS & Perfect Pearl Launch Event

Last week I attended a fabulous breakfast hosted by The MOMS at Fred's at Barneys NY to launch the luxurious skin care company Perfect Pearl for mother & baby. We were introduced to the creator Ying Zhou who is a lifelong believer in the power of pearls.

It was inspiring to hear Ying's story of how she came about to create this line for her children. Being half Chinese, I remember my Nana using pearl creams in her daily routine. She always had such beautiful skin. After this event, I wish I followed my Nana's ritual!

"Having grown up in Asia where our history celebrates the health benefits of the pearl, it seemed so natural for me to create a line of products that incorporates pearl extract. It is well documented by ancient generations that pearl extract has powers for healing, vitality and beauty. And studies show it is also one of the most healthy and wholesome substances to put on your baby's skin."

Perfect Pearl is now delivering to moms and babies the highest quality products made in the U.S.A. All products are hypoallergenic, fragrance free, colorant and paraben free and they are endorsed by dermatologist Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil.

Celebrating Chinese New Year

Every beginning of the year, I get excited about 2 things; my birthday and Chinese New Year. This Sunday is the start of Chinese New Year, the year of the Snake. Being half Chinese, I always remember celebrating with my family. We were either at a Chinese banquet or having a dinner at home. Of course the red envelopes! Our elders always made sure we were given these envelopes with crisp bills.
Now that I don't have any Asian relatives left, it is up to my siblings & I to keep the spirit of tradition alive for our kids. For the past years we have gone to Chinatown to enjoy the fine delicacies of dim sum. Afterwards we would join in on the fun of blowing off poppers into the crowds. Confetti is strewn all over. Then we watch the dragon dance its way into local shops bringing fortune & luck for the new year.
It's such a fun day. My son enjoys it all. I can only hope he will continue with celebrating this holiday as much as he does Christmas. I have such pride in being Chinese. I will always cherish the memories I had and will make. Gung Hay Fat Choy!

Yo Gabba Gabba Hello Friends! App Review

My son loves to play on my Ipad. I think he has more games on it than I do. So when I was given the opportunity to review the new Yo Gabba Gabba Hello Friends app I knew it would be a great new game for him to test out.

Hello Friends! is an interactive experience designed specifically for kids based on the hit TV show Yo Gabba Gabba! They can chat with their favorite characters, watch Yo Gabba Gabba! clips and even play awesome games within the safety of the Hello Friends! app.

Andre enjoyed playing. He especially liked placing virtual stickers on the characters. It kept him entertained and singing along.

What I love about this app is that its pure entertainment. It's one of his favorite shows so I know it will keep him occupied for awhile. The app is constantly being updated which is awesome for keeping the kiddies engaged.

The Yo Gabba Gabba Hello Friends! App can be purchased at Itunes and Google play for $3.99.

Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post. I was given the app to facilitate this review.

Pantene Expert Collection #Giveaway

A few weeks ago I attended an event hosted by Momtrends featuring Pantene's new AgeDefy and Advanced Keratin hair products. I was surprised to learn that hair "ages" with time. I took a hair quiz and found out my hair is 38 years old, a few years younger than me. I don't use products or dye my hair. What I do is Japanese straightening because I have very thick, frizzy hair. I have been doing it for the past 2 years which I am worried will damage my hair in the long run. So I was definitely excited about Pantene's new collection.

Just like our skin, hair shows visible signs of aging. Pantene’s decade-long research revealed that symptoms go beyond greying and thinning. Women may experience multiple signs of aging hair like breakage, split ends, frizz, unruly greys, lackluster color and dryness. That’s why Pantene set out to develop advanced technologies that finally help women get back the hair from their youth.

Advanced Keratin
 ·       Pantene Advanced+ Keratin Repair products work together to repair two years of damage in two minutes.
·       This collection was designed to help restore smoothness to extremely damaged hair, while also working to prevent further damage at the keratin level.
·       The products offer higher levels of damage repair performance needed by women who want long hair and need to repair and prevent more serious damage.

Age Defy
·       The Pantene AgeDefy collection is the first and only line of anti-aging hair care product options created to fight multiple signs of intrinsic and extrinsic hair aging, including breakage, split ends, frizz, unruly grays, lackluster color, thin look, and dryness.
·       The AgeDefy line works together to thicken existing hair to make hair act up to 10 years younger.
·       The Pantene AgeDefy Advanced Thickening Treatment increases the diameter of existing hair fibers, so it’s as if 6,500 hair fibers have been added to one’s hair.

I have been using both products for a few weeks now. I've noticed a difference in my hair. It's shinier & definitely looking healthier. I'm hoping its taking some years of my hair. One of us needs to look young again!

Take the hair quiz & find out  how old your hair is at youbeauty.com.

3 lucky readers will have a chance to try out one of Pantene's Expert Collection!

-Age Defy Collection
-Advanced Keratin Collection
-Ageless Beauty Collection

Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post. I received products to facilitate a review. Giveaway ends 2/13/13. Three winners will be selected via Rafflecopter. Winners have 24 hours to respond.

Go Shorty Its Your Birthday

I can't believe I'm another year older! Maybe a little wiser but definitely blessed. I had a great weekend celebrating with my family, just how I wanted it. I look forward to what the year will bring me. I take on any challenges with strong will and determination. 40s are the new 20s right?

Join us in the Listerine 21 Day Challenge #Listerine

Did you know that brushing alone misses 75% of your mouth?
I was amazed by this fact that I had to put it up in big, bold print. Even if you brush twice a day, you're likely missing a majority of your mouth. I have to say I'm a bit of a fanatic when it comes to my teeth. I've been told by my dentist that I'm brushing too hard. I just can't help it. Teeth are one of the first features that people look at, so you want them to be clean, right? I'm very conscious about food in between my teeth. I am constantly using floss or a pik. My husband is just as neurotic as I am. He's had some dental issues growing up, so maintaining an oral health routine is important to him.

Don't get me started on my son's brushing habits. He's 6, need I say more? If I can get him to brush his teeth for a minute it would be a miracle. He just bought the Gangnam style tooth brush, so I'm hoping while he's dancing he won't realize he's suppose to be cleaning his little pearly whites.

I was excited when I was invited to take the Listerine 21 day challenge to improve our oral health. We will be brushing, flossing and gargling with Listerine. This challenge may be difficult at first for our son, but I intend on keeping it fun for him.

By using Listerine Antiseptic mouthwash twice a day for thirty seconds you will get:
  • Up to 5 times healthier gums in 2 weeks
  • Up to 9 times healthier gums in 4 weeks

Participating in this challenge offers the added benefit of joining the makers of LISTERINE Ultraclean in helping Oral Health America impact the lives of children nationwide this year through the Smiles Across America program.

Did you know?
  • Oral disease is now the most chronic childhood illness in the U.S. This statistic alone is devastating to hear especially since millions are unable to afford or get access to routine dental care.
  • There are more germs in your mouth than there are people on earth!!
  • As many as 130 million Americans lack dental insurance, including more than 15.4 million children.
  • More than 51 million school hours and 164 millions work hours are lost each year due to dental disease

For every person who signs up for the challenge, the LISTERINE brand will make a contribution to help Oral Health America's Smile Across America program toward their goal of connecting 210,000 children with needed oral health services in 2013.
